Mount Kenya Kit List
The basic idea of your kit is to keep you warm, dry, protected and comfortable from the sun and rain. The main principles are:-
CAMPING EQUIPMENT
Sleeping Bag: one rated to between -10o and 0o centigrade should be fine. Bag should be a snug fit since if it is too large there will be more cool air for the body to warm.
CLOTHING
* Hiking Boots: it is vital to have a comfortable, waterproof pair of boots. Make sure they have been broken in before you get on the mountain.
* Pair of sports shoes: for wearing around camp
* Gloves
* Balaclava
* Woolen hat
* Sun hat or baseball cap
* Waterproof jacket and trousers
* Windproof jacket
* Fleece
* Lots of t-shirts
* Lots of warm socks
* Warm long trousers
* Shorts
* Jersey
* Thermal underwear
ACCESSORIES
* Head Torch
* Large rucksack: for all the clothes and equipment (for the porter to
carry)
* Small rucksack: for carrying water, snacks, camera, waterproofs on
the day hikes.
* Drinking bottle: a metal thermos is ideal since this can double up
as a hot water bottle at night.
* Sunglasses
* Water Purification Tablets
BAGS
A duffel type bag for general use and leaving gear in Nanyuki, A Rucksack for a porter to carry your kit on the mountain and a small pack for carrying items with you during the day.
GENERAL CLOTHING
Clothing and footwear for travel to Kenya and prior to/after the climb
SHELL
Waterproof layer to keep off wind/rain. An umbrella can be very useful.
INSULATION
Layered system to keep you warm on the mountain- body hands & Head
FEET
Sturdy trekking boots, Flip flops/sandals
SLEEPING
Warm sleeping bag and camping mat to get a good nights sleep
EATING/DRINKING
Water bottles and favourite high-energy snacks
WASHING & MEDICAL
Suncream, anti-malarials and a small 1st aid kit to allow you to wash and maybe stave off a headache or blister (leaders will have a larger group one)
